NEW DELHI: India added five medals on Wednesday as Mirabai Chanu ended her long wait for an Asian Games medal with a silver in weightlifting, while the men’s and women’s skeet teams, Jay Meena and the men’s badminton team won bronze medals.India’s overall tally now stands at 12 medals – one gold, five silver and six bronze. India’s lone gold has come from the women’s cricket team, which retained its Asian Games title on Tuesday.
Mirabai ends 12-year wait
Mirabai Chanu finally won her maiden Asian Games medal after finishing second in the women’s 49kg weightlifting event. The Olympic silver medallist lifted a total of 198kg (87kg in Snatch and 111kg in Clean & Jerk) to win silver.The medal ended India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games. Karnam Malleswari was the last Indian weightlifter to win an Asiad medal, taking silver in 1998.
Shooting adds two more bronzes
India also won two bronze medals in shooting, with both the men’s and women’s skeet teams finishing third. The women’s team of Raiza Dhillon, Maheshwari Chauhan and Parinaaz Dhaliwal scored 331 points to finish behind China and Kazakhstan.In the men’s event, Anantjeet Singh Naruka, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Bhavtegh Singh Gill combined for 346 points to claim bronze.These two medals took India’s shooting tally to seven medals so far.
Jay Meena creates history
Jay Meena also won a historic bronze medal in men’s singles soft tennis. The medal was India’s first in soft tennis at the Asian Games. Meena had returned to the Games after going without a medal in his previous two appearances.
Badminton team adds another bronze
India’s men’s badminton team also finished with a bronze medal after losing 1-3 to China in the semifinal. Lakshya Sen and Ayush Shetty lost their singles matches, while Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were the only Indian pair to win their match.The bronze marked India’s second-ever Asian Games medal in the men’s team badminton event.
