Before Amazon became a global giant, Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott rented a $890-a-month Seattle-area home; 32 years later, Bezos' property portfolio is worth over $700 million

Before Amazon became one of the world’s largest technology and retail companies, Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott were living in a rented three-bedroom house in Bellevue, Washington, paying just $890 a month, as reported by Architectural Digest. Its garage provided the space where Bezos began working on the online bookshop that launched in 1995. More than three decades later, his property holdings look very different. From waterfront estates and historic Beverly Hills mansions to luxury apartments in New York and a sprawling Texas ranch, Bezos has assembled a real estate portfolio estimated to be worth more than $700 million.

The $890-a-month Bellevue rental where Jeff Bezos started Amazon

In 1994, Bezos and Scott left New York City and settled in Bellevue, Washington. Bezos had been working in finance but decided to pursue an opportunity in the rapidly developing internet market. Reportedly, the couple chose a three-bedroom property measuring around 1,540 square feet, paying $890 each month to live there. Its garage provided space for Bezos to begin working on the online bookshop that would become Amazon. Rather than immediately renting a commercial office, he used the available space to get the business moving. Amazon officially launched in July 1995, although its operations soon outgrew the original arrangement and shifted to larger office and warehouse facilities.

Jeff Bezos expanded his Medina estate with a $45 million mansion

Bezos’s property purchases began to change as Amazon expanded. In 1998, four years after arriving in Washington state, he spent $10 million on two neighbouring residences in Medina, an affluent community overlooking Lake Washington. The waterfront setting included around 310 feet of private shoreline and a boathouse. The neighbourhood was already home to other prominent technology figures, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.Bezos later invested heavily in the estate. In 2010, he reportedly spent $28 million renovating the property. During the same year, he acquired another house next door, adding approximately five acres to his holdings. The Tudor-style residence measured around 24,000 square feet and had been listed for $53 million. Reports put the purchase price at approximately $45 million.

New York apartments added to his growing portfolio

Bezos began acquiring property on the opposite coast in 1999, when he paid $7.65 million for three apartments at The Century, an Art Deco building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The three units, covering approximately 4,400 square feet, included a three-storey penthouse and two apartments immediately below it. Their position offered views across Central Park. In 2012, Bezos reportedly added another 1,725-square-foot apartment in the same building for $5.3 million. His New York holdings expanded considerably in 2019. That year, he bought three apartments overlooking Madison Square Park for a combined $80 million. The purchase included a penthouse spread across three floors, measuring approximately 10,000 square feet, alongside two adjoining residences. The penthouse was designed on a scale that went well beyond a conventional city apartment. It included a ballroom, a library with a marble and glass fireplace, a large main suite and a private observatory, according to reports. Two further purchases followed. Bezos paid $16 million for another three-bedroom apartment in the building in April 2020, then acquired an additional unit for $23 million less than a year later. These transactions brought the reported value of his holdings in the building to $119 million, covering approximately 24,551 square feet.

Jeff Bezos expanded his Texas ranch to more than 400,000 acres

Not all of Bezos’s property purchases have been intended as conventional homes. In 2004, he acquired Figure 2 Ranch, a large property near Van Horn in West Texas. The original purchase price has not been publicly established, but the land initially covered around 30,000 acres. The property had previously belonged to attorney Ronald Stasny, who had spent considerable money updating its main residence. Built during the 1920s, the single-storey house underwent changes to its kitchen, bathroom, flooring and porches before Bezos acquired it.The ranch later became known as Corn Ranch and took on a different purpose. It serves as an operational base for Blue Origin, the private aerospace company Bezos established in 2000. Its location and extensive land area made it suitable for the company’s work, giving the property a role beyond private residential use.The ranch also has a personal connection for Bezos. He reportedly associated the landscape with memories of visiting his grandfather’s ranch in Cotulla, Texas, during his childhood.By 2023, the property had reportedly expanded to more than 400,000 acres. A feature in Vogue, which included a helicopter tour with Lauren Sánchez, offered a look at some of its unusual additions. These included a structure associated with a 10,000-Year Clock, built approximately 500 feet underground, and a bar called the Kármán Line Bar, decorated with space-related memorabilia.A two-storey main residence, swimming pool and several ranch buildings also form part of the property. The scale of Corn Ranch makes it quite different from Bezos’s urban apartments and waterfront homes.

Beverly Hills purchases included a historic estate

California became another important part of Bezos’s property collection. In 2007, he paid $24.45 million for a Spanish-style residence in Beverly Hills. The property included a main house of nearly 12,000 square feet and a separate guesthouse. The estate had seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, alongside a greenhouse, swimming pool, formal gardens and a sunken tennis court. Its other features included a six-car garage, a game room and an indoor-outdoor bar.Ten years later, Bezos bought the neighbouring property for $12.9 million. The 1956-built house covered approximately 4,600 square feet and contained four bedrooms. He retained both residences. His largest Beverly Hills purchase came in February 2020. Bezos paid $165 million for the historic Warner estate, previously owned by entertainment businessman David Geffen. The property had originally been designed by architect Roland Coate in 1923 for Harry Warner, one of the founders of Warner Bros. Studios. Set across approximately 10 acres, the estate includes a Georgian-style main house measuring around 13,600 square feet, two guesthouses, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a nine-hole golf course. A large motor court and service garage are also part of the grounds. The main residence has several historic details, including antique wooden flooring reportedly imported from overseas. Bezos followed the purchase with another $10 million acquisition in July 2020, buying the neighbouring 4,615-square-foot property.Renovation work continued over the following years. Aerial photographs published in December 2025 showed additions including pickleball courts, a firepit and a beach volleyball court. Images also revealed a metallic structure resembling a spacecraft capsule, while the swimming pool had undergone changes of its own.

Two Washington mansions became one major project

Bezos also established a significant presence in the US capital. In late 2016, he spent $23 million on two adjoining mansions in Washington, DC, with a combined floor area of approximately 27,000 square feet. The Georgian-style buildings date back to 1914 and had previously housed the Textile Museum. Their size made them among the largest residential properties in the city. Bezos reportedly intended to combine the two structures into a single family residence.Plans for the renovation included a reported $12 million investment in 2018, with proposals for a garden room among the changes. The combined property was described as having 10 bedrooms and 11 bathrooms. In 2020, Bezos purchased another house across the street for approximately $5 million. The additional property provided further separation from the surrounding neighbourhood while adding to his Washington holdings.

Hawaii brought a different kind of waterfront property

One of Bezos’s other major purchases in 2020 took him to Maui, Hawaii. He acquired a compound near La Perouse Bay, reportedly valued at around $78 million. At the time, the transaction was described as a record for the island’s most expensive residential property sale. The arrangement was unusual because Bezos bought the company holding the land rather than purchasing the property directly. The site covers approximately 14 acres and includes a main residence measuring 4,500 square feet, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Two guesthouses provide additional accommodation, while an outdoor kitchen and a 700-square-foot swimming pool overlook the surrounding coastal landscape. The property also includes access to a two-acre deeded cove. Its position beside the Pacific Ocean and private beach distinguishes it from the urban residences in his collection. The Hawaiian compound remains another example of how widely Bezos’s property interests have spread.

Miami became his main base after leaving Seattle

Bezos’s move towards Florida became public in late 2023, when he announced plans to relocate from Seattle to Miami. The decision coincided with a series of purchases on Indian Creek Island, a privately developed barrier island known for its concentration of wealthy residents. The location is often called Billionaire Bunker. Among its high-profile property owners are Mark Zuckerberg, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Tom Brady and David Guetta.Bezos began building his presence there in August 2023, paying $68 million for a waterfront estate covering approximately 2.8 acres. The existing residence, originally constructed in 1965, measured around 9,300 square feet and contained three bedrooms and three bathrooms.Just two months later, he acquired the neighbouring Mediterranean-style mansion for another $79 million. At approximately 19,000 square feet, it was considerably larger, with seven bedrooms and 14 bathrooms. A third purchase followed in April 2024. Bezos paid $90 million for another residence on the island, bringing his reported spending on Indian Creek properties to $237 million. The third house covers around 12,000 square feet and has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms.

From an $890 rental to a portfolio worth more than $700 million

The distance between Bezos’s first Bellevue rental and his current property collection is considerable. The $890 monthly home was a three-bedroom house where a garage provided the working space for a new online business. His later purchases include historic estates, large city apartments, private waterfront compounds and thousands of acres of Texas land. His move to Miami has changed where he spends much of his time, but it has not meant abandoning every earlier property. He continues to maintain holdings in several locations, including Seattle, California, Washington, DC, New York, Texas and Hawaii. The estimated value of his real estate portfolio now exceeds $700 million. That figure sits alongside a business career that began with an online bookshop launched in 1995 and developed into one of the world’s largest technology and retail companies.Disclaimer: This article is based on information publicly available.
