BENGALURU: A major tragedy was averted when a 42-year-old software engineer from the city, driving under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his sedan, crossed Indiranagar’s 100 Feet Road and rammed into the wall of a restaurant before coming to a halt. A youth sustained injuries, and two vehicles were damaged in the accident, which occurred on Thursday at around 11.30 pm.Vehicles were passing along the busy Indiranagar 100 Feet Road when the car jumped the road median. Around six people, including women, were standing outside Barbeque Nation when the car stormed in their direction, forcing them to run to safety. The sedan crashed into the wall of the Barbeque Nation outlet before coming to a halt.The accused driver was identified as Derrik Tony, a resident of Domlur. A techie with a private company, Tony was driving back home alone from a party, police said after subjecting him to an alcohol test. Based on a complaint filed by Lal Mohammed, a staff member at Barbeque Nation, the Jeevan Bhimanagar traffic police booked Tony under Sections 281 (rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way endangering human life or likely to cause hurt or injury) and 125 (acts endangering human life or personal safety through rash or negligent behaviour) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Tony was also booked for drunk driving. “A charge sheet will be filed against Tony under Sections 281, 125 and the Indian Motor Vehicles Act for drunk driving. His vehicle has been seized, and he will have to appear before a court and pay the fine before getting it released,” a senior traffic police officer said. Another traffic police officer, who visited the spot and conducted the investigation, expressed shock over the incident. “I must say it was very, very fortunate that other commuters and those standing outside the restaurant escaped being hit. Tony entered the 100 Feet Road from a side lane. CCTV footage shows him driving rashly in that lane. He was supposed to take a left turn on reaching the 100 Feet Road. Instead, he drove straight and jumped the median. A great tragedy was averted,” the officer said.
